The Role of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one of the chief antioxidants in the body. It combats free radical molecules and microbial invaders. It works in connection with other antioxidants such as Vitamin E.
Fighting Infections: Vitamin C can destroy bacteria directly and also helps to neutralise bacterial toxins. Its primary role is that it boosts our natural defence systems. Research has shown that during an illness, vital components (white blood cells and antibodies) of our immune system lose Vitamin C. Keeping up our levels of Vitamin C is therefore vital in defending against infections.
Allergies: Some recent research has also shown that daily doses of 1000mg may be of benefit in combating allergies. The benefits take time, as the concentration within the body must reach an adequate level.
Stress: The adrenal glands produce the hormones, which are necessary to deal with stress. These contain more Vitamin C than any other part of the body. Ascorbate plays a key role in the manufacture of these hormones, which are necessary to deal with stress.
Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to a disease known as scurvy. It is characterised by bleeding gums. Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body and is excreted readily. A daily intake of Vitamin C is therefore essential for healthy gums, teeth, bones, skin and blood vessels. It also promotes the absorption of iron and helps the body to resist infection. It is an ideal all year round supplement.
